We didn´t know if we were going to like Santiago as we had heard so much more about Argentina than Chile.  As it turned out we really enjoyed our 3 days exploring this sprawling western style metropolis although it took some time adjusting having arrived from South America´s cheapest country to one of the most expensive.

After some fantastic advice from the chap in the tourist office we took ourselves on a walking tour of the city taking in the excellent parks, the sparkling new tower blocks of the business district and numerous pavement cafes and bars.  The highlight was probably the ride on the funicular up to a viewpoint and then back down by a very high and rather tiny cable car (I had great fun taking photos of Michelle looking very scared on the way down - D).

It has to be said we did suffer from a kind of reverse cuture shock after Peru and Bolivia.  It was an incredible contrast and we kind of realised that we were going to miss Bolivia especially (and I don´t mean just the 30p lunches - M).

Greetings!! I am new to this site and I've been reading your blog enries, finding them very informative! Wow! what an awesome time it must have been for you guys! I'm currently planning a trip in the likes of yours, about 6-8 months. I just wanted to ask for some advice if you don't mind. How did you find places to stay? I'd love to stay with local family operated 'hostels' b&bs, is there a particular source you've used? Is there a book you can recommend? And how did you guys fund your trip? And did you bring a lot of stuff to begin with, clothes, shoes, etc.? Any advice you can give me would be greatly appreciated!! Thanx, Anya :)
