The Quite Nice Mostly Ocean Road

We had left our big bags in the hostel in Melbourne, so we got ourselves a nice little 3-door car for our road trip.  So off we headed, on one of the most amazing road journeys in the world.  Or so they'd have you believe.  To be honest, the best bit was probably when we spotted the kangaroos in a field on the side of the road, or pulled over to see what a large group of people were taking photos of, only to spot about 10 koalas in the trees.  As for the road, it was, well, alright.

Don't get me wrong, there were some beautiful views of the beaches and coastlines, it just wasn't all that great.  And it wasn't even all ocean; as soon as I took over the driving I began to think I must have taken a wrong turn, because the scenery turned from coastline to forest.  But yeah, it was nice, I just think someone should do the Australian Tourist board for false advertising.  Maybe that could pay for the rest of my trip...

We stopped off to see the 12 Apostles as well, they were pretty cool.  They're basically pillars of rock sticking out of the sea, remnants of erosion.  There was also a London Bridge - apparently one arch of it collapsed a couple of years ago, and two people got stuck on the remaining pillar!  That would have been pretty cool, if you had known for sure you weren't going to die, that is.  There were a couple of other blowholes and things, but we've seen so many of them at this stage that we didn't even bother stopping.

We stayed in a hostel in Warrnambool that day.  We got there early evening, and just sat around watching tele and playing pool.  I was knackered and got an early night.  The next morning we checked out and headed off, stopping off at a cheese factory (not my idea!) on the way.  We took a quicker road home, just for a bit of a change.  It was an inland route, and it was weird just how deserted it was.  I drove for miles and miles without ever seeing one house.  The land was really flat as well, so you could see for ages in both directions - the land was really yellow, and I don't know how but there was actually cattle grazing on it.  It was very much how I imagined the outback to be like, although I guess it's even more barren.

So yeah, we did the Great Ocean Road, and the A1 on the way back.  It was nice and all, but maybe not as good as they make out.
