back home again!
From back home again! in Anchorage, United States on May 08 '05
9 May - cold and rainy in SF and Seattle but sunny and 70 degrees in Juneau.....beautiful sunset for landing.\r
\r
10 May - Walk to Heritage Coffee where they have free ten minutes of internet....so am catching up! A day of running errands: reconnect my telephone, discuss job opportunities at the State, mow my lawn (actually get rid of dandelions), visit with friends, shop for groceries.\r
\r
11 May - Clouds are moving in for our hike to Sheep Creek today but it stayed dry all day...unfortunately, I am now feeling the pain having not hiked many mountains recently. Enjoyed the films Before Sunrise and Before Sunset (filmed in Paris).\r
\r
12 May - Still no rain in morning but it is now raining in the afternoon....much needed. A day for a haircut and a massage. Also decided to work back at the State of Alaska as rehire so will start on 27 May.\r
\r
13 May - Friday the Thirteenth!\r
Morning walk out Basin Road along Gold Creek with overcast skies and a few sprinkles. Thank goodness for rain as I can now tackle the paperwork that seems miles high. \r
\r
14 May - Because I volunteer for the tourism industry, we have an annual town walkabout to get acquainted with the old and new merchants of Juneau and some give away free gifts such as rain jackets and others have a drawing...still waiting to see if I have won anything. Today is also cheap day on the tram to the top of Mt Roberts...instead of $24 it is $6 for the locals cos no cruise ships in today. Sunny and rainy mixed. My computer died this evening; it appears that it needs a new backup battery and of course it is now the weekend and cannot order one until Monday...which is when the cable guy will show up to connect me to the internet!\r
\r
15 May - Helicopter ride to Taku/Norris Glacier with Coastal as a fam trip. Another tourism day with free admission to all the museums to view their new exhibits. Enjoyed hot dogs at the State Museum where there is a new Ray Troll Shark exhibit, cake at the City Museum, walked out to the Mining Museum for fresh veggies and fruit and then downtown for ghost stories at the Alaska Hotel. Stopped by the Bear's Lair gift shop as I won a bear cookie jar in yesterday's walkabout!\r
\r
16 May - Rug cleaning today so am moving everything to the basement. Also getting connected to internet but my computer died so no use until I get a new battery!\r
\r
17 May - Boat ride to view whales and have salmon lunch at Orca Lodge on Colt Island. As a volunteer for the city, we get free fam trips. Now internetting at the University where they also have free printing! Stopped by to see Katy and Dan's new home and pick up the remainder of the mail that they have collected.\r
\r
18 May - Still busy moving stuff back into the house after major rug cleaning. Hike to Granite Basin.\r
\r
21 May - Cruise to Dawes Glacier at the end of Endicott Arm and also down Ford's Terror.\r
\r
22 May - A warm sunny day in Juneau. A ride up the tram to the top of Mt Roberts and then a hike in the sunshine with Myra and Alice and helped them mark the trail so that the tourists off the cruise ship do not destroy our precious mountain and its beautiful flowers. Saw a black bear really close to us sliding down the snow bank.\r
\r
23 May - Jogging on the flume (where I met a porcupine) and a workout at the gym. A day of errands and catching up. Visited the library and found a video World Without Walls about Beryl Markham's life in Africa....have now found her book West with the Night which was reprinted in the 1980's with the help of the owner of Ondines Restaurant in Sausalito after he had met Hemingway Jr and was impressed with Hemingway Sr's comments on Markham's book.\r
\r
24 May - Another fam trip with Orca Enterprises to view both Orca (Killer) and Humpback whales. Had them drop me out the road so that I could wander the shopping malls and see what has changed. I also needed new curtains as I have been washing curtains and windows and my lace ones fell to pieces in the washer! Went to pick lilacs at the neighbours and there was a black bear helping me out!\r
\r
25 May - The Wednesday hike at Mile 27 to the beach and the boy scout camp and then a potluck picnic and 80th birthday celebration for Ilse Thomas at Eagle Beach.\r
\r
26 May - Another fam trip....this time with Temsco Helicopters and the Pilots Choice with Chip and John to Gilkey and Herbert glaciers which are north.\r
\r
27 May - First day back at the State!\r
\r
28 May - Juneau Jazz and Classics\r
\r
29 May - Morning at the kiosk greeting visitors and then joined Bob Reinaker (of Mozambique) for dinner. He needed to stop at the youth hostel and ended up running into an Australian woman that I had travelled with in Viet Nam!\r
\r
30 May - Monday Memorial Day Holiday!\r
\r
31 May - 3 June - busy work days filling out forms and catching up....seems like not much has changed in a year! \r
\r
4 June - A day of rain and because I have not been feeling well (caught the local bug after surviving all those foreign ones) so just rested.\r
\r
5 June - The sun returned but windy and cool.\r
\r
18 June - Sunny and hot so drove out the road to hike Point Bridget trail through the wildflowers and visit Cowee Creek cabin.\r
\r
19 June - Ron, Trish and Meagan Swanson from Virginia visited off the Vision of the Seas cruise ship....unfortunately it was our first day of rain in several days but we enjoyed our tour around town.\r
\r
20-24 June - Cooler and rainy.\r
\r
25 June - Dry day for hike up Dan Moller with Carolyn, Mary Zahn and Geraldin.\r
\r
26 June - A very dry and hot day so did taxes early in the morning and mowed the lawn.\r
