The Misol Ha and Aqua Azul Waterfalls
From The Central American experience in Palenque, Mexico on Feb 09 '06
Misojaand Agua Azul on the Tulija river south of Palenque are two incredible waterfalls which we were fortunate enough to visit. Agua Azul's aqua blue water is extremely inviting as it flows hundreds meters over various rock terraces.
Rio Otulúm flows to form the Aqua Azul cascades. The blue colour of its water is formed when the water runs over the limestone rock, dissolving small lime particles that contain magnesium salts and some other chlorides.
It is spectacular. The turquoise water, deep green vegetation and dark blue sky demand (of me) much picture taking. Some in our group change into swimsuits and jump into the lower lagoon. Mike and I walk along a scenic pathway, enjoying the river upstream, watching water drop over dozens of rock terraces. A higher lagoon shimmers an invitation, but no one is swimming here. “Dangerous Not To Swim” the sign in English tells us.
