European Cultural Captital of 2005

We went here during the Easter weekend and unfortunately most of the exhibitions and museums were closed. Therefore we didn't see much of the cultural side of Cork, we did however see some churches and cathedral's.

The most noticable would be St. Finn Barre's Cathedral, a splendid triple-spired example of French-gothic architecture. Although we really do reckon they need to clean the walls a bit and restore it to its original state.

The North Main Street is the start of the main shopping area, where the Cork Vision Centre is located, unfortunately it was closed during Easter. Over the North Gate Bridge and climbing up Shandon Street, you can find the Shandon Church. The tower may be climbed after paying an entrance fee of 6 euro, should give a nice view over the city center.

For those interested the English Market is a covered market for fish, fruit, meat and vegetable, this is probably where Corkonians do their shopping.

On the final day, we went to visit the Fitzgerald Park with the Shakey Bridge, which was a bit disappointing because it didn't really shake. We caught a glimpse of the University College Cork as we went down to see the Cork Lough with its Bird Sanctuary.
