My trip to Amsterdam in Holland for New Years with Sarah and Mel and a couple of their friends was awesome! We took off on Saturday, I flew from Southampton, which is way easier and we met up at Schipol airport before heading to our hotel located in Liedsplein near the Van Gogh Museum. In good tradition there was a reunion bottle of vodka consumed on Saturday night prior to heading to Rookies which is a pretty decent coffee shop / bar with good music and atmosphere, as well as loads of fit foreign men – what a feast for the eyes! French, Italian, Spanish, Dutch, American, you name it they were there, all looking fine.

New Years Eve we went down to Dam Square and did a bit of shopping etc. during the day (got me some clog slippers and more magnets), walked around the Red Light District and the rest of the city, taking refuge in coffee shops such as De Roquery and Nes Café which are two good ones.We also went to see the world's only public cannibas garden at Cannabis College, which was kind of interesting.

That's what I call a New Years celebration!

I should mention the Dutch love their fireworks and these had been going off since we arrived - on every street. It is such a pretty canal city, looks totally nuts covered in red fire cracker paper.

New Year's night we went to The Grasshopper which was rubbish, no atmosphere, arrogant bartenders and drinks at six euros – who are they kidding. So we left and wandered around some alleyways until the rain forced us into a wee barely visible bar called Biers Bodega – it turned out to be the smallest pub in Amsterdam. The people here were awesome! There was a mic so everyone was singing cheesy old tracks like 'Big Shot' and drumming drumsticks on the bar with firecrackers going off outside the bar in the alley.

So here we stayed partying with a French couple, some Dutch people and…of course…. a couple of blimmin' Kiwis! You cannot go anywhere in Europe without coming across a Kiwi somewhere.

Just before midnight, Sarah, Mel and I ran out to the street by the Dam to see the fireworks display and started dancing around, firecrackers going off everywhere, everyone drinking one another's champagne in the street – that's what I call a New Years celebration! Most memorable I've had since the millennium I think.
