Hermosillo is an interesting city, definitely not a vacation spot. It is about an hour flight from Phoenix, Arizona and I think a few hour drive from Tucson. Only an hour or less to San Carlos - a quiet town on the coast.

I stayed in the Fiesta Americana for the first part of my stay and later moved to an apartment up the road. Driving was no problem at all once you figured out a few rules and followed the flow. It took a few trips to get the lay of the land but again, maps work too. I would recomend renting from Rio Rent A Car as opposed to a name brand American chain. The guys from Rio speak perfect english, offer all the same insurance, and none of the hassle. They would pick me and or my car up from the company I was working at or my hotel or the airport, making picking up and returning absolutely painless.

The first time I got off the plane and felt the heat, I thought it was from the engine. It is the kind of heat you can see swirling off the ground.

Hermosillo was HOT in the spring and summer months with no rain. The first time I got off the plane and felt the heat, I thought it was from the engine. It is the kind of heat you can see swirling off the ground. As a business woman I wore pants and shell or short sleeve tops - no jacket required. I was working in the automotive supplier park so it was less casual then typical - (the park supports the Ford assembly plant currently making the Zephyr, Fusion and Milan).

The evening entertainment was filled with Sports Planet, El Grito, Neo, Siete Copas, concerts and baseball games. My favorite dinner spots were Los Arboles, Mariachisimo, and my all time favorite was Tacos Lite (Taco stand on Kino Blvd by Sports Planet).

It was fun to go up the "mountain" to see the sun set, have a few beers or watch the city lights. It really gives you a great idea of how large Hermosillo is. The road to go up the mountain can be tricky to find, but anyone can give you directions as there is really only one mountain to go up!

Sundays are a good day to go to the Cathedral downtown and people watch, eat Elotes (corn) and enjoy friends. It is an interesting view into the courting and the culture and a nice place to hang out.
