I'm in Africa!
From First stop Tanzania! in Nairobi, Kenya on Sep 03 '06
I'm totally exhausted after a long flight. Left Uk at about 11pm and arrived at about 230pm (1230 UK time), stopped in Dubai on the way and met up with Kirstie from the group. She's great and we had lots of chats on the way. When we arrived at Nairobi airport I expected to have to hang around for her to get through passport control as she did not have a visa yet and I got mine in advance, in London. Much to my amazement that bit of preparation was a complete waste of time as in the time it took her to fill out her forms and buy her visa I was still standing in my passport queue for another 10 mins! But all was well, bags got through ok and we were picked up by a very friendly English speaking (also speaks 3 tribal languages and Swahili) driver. He greeted us Karibu (welcome) and tried his best to teach us a bit more swahili on the way to the hotel. The hotel was friendly but not in a great area so we ventured out for about 10 minutes before deciding it was best to stay put and eat at the hotel restaurant. That turned out to be a great plan as I had a fantastic steak for about four quid! We couldn't keep our eyes open even though it was only about 6pm in the UK so got an early night and waited for Jo to arrive.
Next morning we were up early for a 9 hour bus ride to Moshi near Kilimanjaro. This wasn't too bad at all and we stopped a few times for a stretch. Getting used to the squat toilets! It was only meant to take 5 hours but this is Africa... I'm learning to be very patient!
