Our circuit of California continued down the state line with Nevada, where we holed up in the kind of spit ´n´sawdust towns you´d never see on the Californian coasts, driving along desert roads and stopping off in old time American diners serving endless coffee.
Our ultimate destination was Yosemite park, but we decided to spend a morning looking at the gold mining ghost town of Bodie en route. It had its heyday in the 1880´s and in 1859, had a population of about 10,000 and was famous for its murders, hold ups and general wickedness - summarised by the small girl who, on hearing she was going there wrote in her diary "Goodbye God, I´m going to Brodie."

Now only the ghosts and the park keepers spook around the 5 percent of wooden houses that remain there...
