A Day at the Beach

Today was a day of rest and relaxation at the campground and beach. We slept in late and walked to the beach after breakfast. The campground is located about 700 yards off of the Atlantic Ocean. The ocean waves were quite large and, to my surprise, the girls had no fear. Taylor and Megan would go out over knee high in water and then ride the large waves back into shore. The beach went on for miles in each direction. Each beach station had two lifeguards. If someone went too far out, or the waves did not look just right, they would call swimmers near the shoreline. Megan was curious with the lifeguards. (They don’t work that hard back home.) She also learned what a rip tide was today.

The campground is more like a recreation park. There is a pool, playground with a sandy field to play beach ball, several sand volleyball courts, and rows and rows of cabanas that people rent each summer. It was very charming. We saw homemade signs some girls were putting around the cabanas and pool area in an attempt to organize a soccer game at noon in the field near the beach dunes. When we left for dinner, we saw a bunch of boys playing kick ball.
For dinner we drove to Gino’s of Long Beach just 15 minutes down the road. Apparently Gino’s is the place to be. It was a Tuesday evening around 7:30 p.m. and the place was packed. When we got back it was pretty late. Taylor and Megan played outside with their flashlights for a while and then the girls and I walked to the beach in the dark. They thought that was pretty neat. While we were at dinner, some neighboring campers put a whole bag of shells and paints on our picnic table for Taylor and Megan. People are so friendly out here. When we were on the subway in New York City yesterday, twice, we had people giving up their seat so that our family could all sit together.
