On our drive this morning we spotted a sandy coloured dingo running across the road in front of us. It took off that quickly that I couldn’t get any film of it. When we got up closer to where it had been we saw a billabong that it had obviously been drinking out of so Greg went for a walk looking for pig sign when he spotted a rusty coloured dingo which he howled up. This alerted me to get the camera but unfortunately I only managed to get a bit of film of it crossing the billabong on the far side while looking back at the strange thing (Greg) howling at him. That was quite exciting.

Butterfly Springs was next on the agenda but it was only a quick visit as the water looked a bit murky so it wasn’t very inviting for a swim. We completed the rest of the journey marvelling at the beauty of the countryside but instead of going into Borroloola we went to King Ash Bay which had been recommended to us but what a disappointment that was - it was a bun fight to find a half decent camp spot for the night which for $20 was a rip off and there really wasn’t that much around. Without a boat the access to the river was minimal so Greg wasn’t even tempted to dangle a line. We went for a walk along the river and came across some pretty dismal, dumpy looking houses - no - dwellings or shanties probably describes them better.

Dear Bundygirl.I am a resident of King Ash Bay & I live in one of those, as you put it,(dismal, dumpy looking, dwellings or shanties).Had you have taken the time to befriend some of the local residents, you may have had a different opinion of King Ash Bay & more than likely would have had the offer to be taken fishing in one of our Boats. There is a saying (Don't judge a book by it's cover-looks are only skin deep).Had you had a look INSIDE some of these dwellings(which we PROUDLY call our HOMES) you would have been pleasantly suprised. The reason these dwellings are steel framed & steel clad is (a)TERMITES (b)Accesability & Cost. Also most of these dwellings, are a work in progress or a renovators delite. We enjoy adding to our structures over time.Time we have plenty of & as the majority of us are pensioners, money is not in abundance. All work & no play, makes a tired & weary pensioner. We came here because of the enviroment & to go FISHING.You seem to forget that we CHOOSE to live in a VERY REMOTE part of this country. We Choose to live in an area which doesn't have Bituemen roads, concrete kerbs & grass footpaths, traffic lights, traffic, pollution, high crime rate etc.We are first & foremost a FISHING CLUB in which some members are fortunate enough to live at.We are self funded by our members & visitors.I beleive,We are a very unique village in a very remote & to my mind a very beautifull part of Australia. To us, this is what we call PARADISE & we are EXTREMELY PROUD of what we have.As for the fee of $20.00/night, our committee who run King Ash Bay,feel that this is a fair price, considering that all our infrastructure & generated Power is Funded predominately by our Members.Had you have stayed longer, you would have been given a Discount. Are you aware of Carpet Bowls on Saturday Afternoon,Hoy on Tuesday Afternoon,Darts on Tuesday Night,Treasure Chest on Thursday Night,Footy on TV & Footy Tipping on Friday Night,Sunday Night Roast & Money Wheel,as well as Trivia Night once a month & the odd Cane Toad Race & Crab Tying. We also have a Monthly Fishing Comp & Annual Fishing Comp.As well we have a Liceinced Bar & Grill,(happy hour on tuesday)Service Station,Mini- Mart,Bed & Breakfast,Donga Hire,House Boat Hire.So you can see, that as a resident, I have Plenty to to do, if I so choose.Had you have stayed longer, you could have participated in some, if not all of these activities.Yes,I agree you are entitled to you opinion, but please when you judge a place take a good LONG look before you make up your mind. Please come back, stay a little longer, meet some of the locals & then deside.
