  • Today was a wonderful and exciting day. After a not to early start due to van cleaning, we went straight to Sherwood Forest. We saw the Major Oak tree but unfortunately, no Robin Hood!!! This was some silly fun for us both and also a nice walk for the morning. From here we went through a town called Worksop where we got terribly lost when all we wanted was a bakery. We had success in the end. Off again, this time towards Hadrian’s Wall before dark. Even with a good run we only just made it. It was freezing cold but we ended up stopping at one of the Ancient Roman fortresses built along the wall. This was unreal how something so old (2000 years) can be in such a well-preserved state, very impressed! Kev, typically, was utterly amazed at the design of the ancient toilets and Jules was caught up with how square/ perfect the walls were. Cos we arrived after 5pm it was free- bonus!! From there we followed the wall along to a picnic spot where we got out, made a cuppa and walked with it up to another part of the wall. This section had been a guard’s quarters/entry point for people wanting to go beyond the Roman boundaries. A quarry between the wall made the scenery all the more unreal. At this stage, dark and cold, we decided that we would drive all the way to Highland Heathers, as we knew we would have a safe place to camp. A long drive with a few deer popping their heads up, but we made it no worries at around 12 midnight. Looking forward to a sleep in tomorrow.
