Returning to Argentina we were expecting the usual cheap steaks and wine and so were disappointed when we arrived to El Calafate as it is just as expensive as Chile, if not more! We stayed in a cool hostel called America del Sur which is a 5 minute walk out of town but its worth it. It has heated floors which is bliss in winter!
The reason we went to El Calafate was to see the famous Perito Moreno Glacier nearby which is one of the largest glaciers in South America. The hostel organised the tour for us which wasn't the best value to be honest - its probably best to shop around the travel companies in town but we were being lazy!

We spent around an hour or so at the glaciers viewing points. Watching and listening to the eerie sounds of ice falling from the glacier into the lake. Its huge and an awesome sight. Its possible to trek on the glacier itself but this trip was very expensive so we couldn't do it but we're hoping to get chance to do that in New Zealand.
On the final evening we decided to treat ourselves for once and went to the well known parrilla restaurant, La Tablita. It was expensive but nice to eat in a proper restaurant for a change with excellent service and fantastic wine (there's a theme developing here!). Of course we ate lots of meat too!
