After yet another 20 hour bus journey, with a few sorry looking people on board, we ended up in San Pedro de Atacama, home of the driest desert on earth. After the European feel of Buenos Aires and Santiago, when I arrived here I felt like the South American journey had begun for real.
San Pedro itself looks like something from the wild west, with dusty roads mud houses, limited electricity and water. With a backdrop of lunar landscapes, massive sand dunes and salt flats, you really do get the feeling of being in the middle of nowhere.

We spent our first full day in the desert which, as the Irish girls would say, was a savage experience! After the Arctic conditions of then south we now found ourselves sand boarding down massive dunes in the driest desert on earth, which was an unbelievable, and sometimes painful experience!
After the sand boarding we headed to lunar valley to watch the sunset over the various rock formations. I'm not usually one for sunsets but this one was pretty cool!
With not much else to do in San Pedro we booked ourselves on a three day 4x4 trip through the desert, ending up in the salt flatsof Bolivia. Will get a post up as soon as I can.
