Seeing as I am now just the other side of the country Emma decided to make a visit to Perth to see her little sister. It was great to spend the weekend with her and fill her in on my travels since Laos. In true Emma fashion the weekend needed to be packed full of exciting activities so where else to take but Rottnest Island!
‘Rotto’ is an island with secluded beaches and turquoise waters and the transport of choice is the bicycle on the car-free roads. We stayed over night on the island which gave us a lot of time to explore the island and snorkel in several of the bays. We hired snorkelling gear and wetsuits (they were worth every cent!) and snorkelled in Mary’s Cove and Little Salmon Bay. The seaweed and coral was teaming with wrasse and angel fish.

Throughout the weekend in Rotto I seemed to have a few problems with birds. When we arrived Emma and I had lunch looking out over the water back to Perth and a seagull decided he liked the look of my food. Instead of stealing it from the plate, which would have been the easiest thing to do the seagull flew down and grabbed a chip just as I was putting it into my mouth. He even clipped my nose on the way down! The next day another incident happened when Em and I were snorkelling in Marys Cove. A group of crows decided they were hungry and opened my rucksack and took out our lunch…apples and crisps gone! Who knew that birds could open bags?!

Em and I also spent a day on the mainland and explored Fremantle. We had brunch along cappuccino strip, looked in the art galleries, watched the street theatre and spent the afternoon shopping in the colourful markets. What is a weekend in Perth if you don’t explore the nightlife? A night out was in order and along with Holly and her housemates we went to the Shed and the Mustang. A great night of live music and dancing!
