From the quiet charm of Palma, it was onto Tunisia - Tunis to be precise - which could never be described as quiet by any stretch of the imagination.  Tunis can only be described as completely unlike anything else you could ever find on the Med; one place where a number of different cultures truly collide. African and Roman, French and Middle Eastern, their influences are all visible in everything from the buildings to the food and the final result is completely unique.

Every corkscrewed alley you go down in Tunis has its own smell, pace and energy. And down every one of them, you’ll meet at least four different shopkeepers who will try to persuade you to buy a fez from them.

Things to do...

Head to Sidi Bou Said - a gorgeous little village precariously perched on the cliffs overlooking the Bay of Tunis. Wander up the cobblestones for a glimpse of the mountain of Bou Kornine, as well as the blue and white doorways and rooftops that makes this place famous.

Visit the ruins of the once powerful city of Carthage. See the Antonine Thermal Baths, amphitheatres, and the Tophet (where human sacrifices were offered to the gods) for a true slice of Tunisian history.

Barter to your heart’s content with a trip to the Tunis medina; spice scented souks line the alleyways and ancient mosques provide a stunning backdrop while you shop.

Resist buying a fez.
