Very cloudy so I took the bus to Icod to visit the Drago Tree, said to be 1000 years old. Icod is a nice little town and the trip back (via the mountain route) provided thrills and views. Villages along the route did not seem so dependent on tourism (agriculture seemed to be thriving) and they all seemed prosperous. Each small village had several areas of public park or space with well cared for plants and flowers. The diversity of plant life here is astounding (perhaps not as impressive as Madeira, but nevertheless impressive).

I bought a book on the local flora and learned that many of the plants are native to Mexico and South America ; they were brought here by the Spanish explorers who used the Canary Islands as a staging post for trips to and from the New World.
