After Mardi Gras I drove through Louisiana into Texas, and man is that state huge. The first sign I read upon entering is "El Paso 857 miles."

I spent the next few days in San Antonio visiting an old friend from high school, who was determined to give me the quinetessential Texan experience.

"The Price Of Freedom" is $11.50, sir.

My first day there we visited the Alamo, which is preserved quite well, a cute museum occupies the barracks, and an enthusiastic (if not historically accurate) speech about the history is given on the hour. Before that we watched the Imax film "The Price Of Freedom" about the battle, at the theater a block or two from the actual site (which is located in the center of the city, along an interesting tourist trap block with Texas fun zones like The Electric Chair- pop in a quarter and get zapped). The theater was full of seniors from the "Diamond Tours" group, who made it a lousy theater-going experience. I was hoping for hoots and hollers and maybe a gunshot or two. The movie was shot for the theater, and was very poor in every single aspect but determination: Remember the Alamo! Now you understand why we hate Mexicans and believe Freedom isn't Free! Our heroes are the men willing to die! Nay! Ready to die!

Cute! There was a wedding at Alamo square.

That night we walked miles along the river walk, the tourist trap walkway below the road along the San Antonio river, where dozens of restaurants have open air dining. The next day progressed simarly, and we ate a less impressive restaurant, Palomo's. On friday the 23rd I set off for Austin and then the ranch.
