Wellington - Our time in the Capital

After checking out of our hostel in Franz Josef we headed further north, in fact this trip was on our way to the North Island. On the way we stopped off at Picton, a tiny town whose only attraction was the huge ferry port which would let us cross over to Wellington.

We stayed a night at a hostel called the Villa; a very homely place with free apple crumble, a Jacuzzi and plenty of sofas to lounge about on. After walking through town and discovering there was nothing there we decided to stay in and play Monopoly.

The following morning we woke early as we had to check out and catch our ferry. We did however have enough time to walk the hostel’s dog; a golden retriever named Millie.

On the ferry we bumped into our mate Joe who we met in Sydney and again played more Monopoly.

We arrived in the capital and headed straight to our hostel, another ‘Nomads’ near the centre of town. This was to be the last night where all 8 of us would be out as Dell was heading home the next day. We therefore hit the Wellington nightlife in a big way. Starting out with three courses at a really nice restaurant called Establishment; we were a few bottles of wine into the night early enough to head to a backpacker bar for vodka lemonades, then back to the restaurant’s bar for shots. It was getting late so the group was divided as a few us went into Maya, a club across the road. For those of us that stayed up, the action carried on well into the morning…

It was an awesome night out and a good way to end our tour of eight. Waking up early afternoon we said bye to Dell and relaxed for the rest of the day. Half the group visited the Te Papa National Museum and then moved onto the Macs Brewery. The day passed very quickly and we were very keen to have a cheap night after the preceding night’s activities so most of us called it a day after one or two beers out in town. We left the following day to head to Rotorua.
