Six days on the Corfu Trail (September 2006)
We arranged our trip through Aperghi Travel (http://www.travelling.gr/aperghi) who provided us with an itinerary.
kittens led us a merry dance
Day 1. We walked to Benitses from Paramonas, the Corfu Trail goes through the villages of Ano Pavliana, Vouniatades, Strongili, and Komianata. At Dafnata, we left the trail and descended on a path down to Benitses. The walk took marginally more than 6 hours.
Day 2. We walked for about 7 hours to Pelekas from Stavros, around the foot of Agii Deka Mountain, Corfu’s second highest peak. We climbed the mountain hrough the village of Ano Garounda. Near the summit we visited an abandoned monastery in a walled garden. We descended to Agii Deka village then to Sinarades. We got lost on the way to Pelekas.
Day 3. We walked from Pelekas for 6 hours to Liapades Beach. On the way we passed Myrtiotissa beach through the village of Vatos, along the bank of the Ropa River through Giannades village and finally to Liapades
Day 4. We walked for just over 4 hours from Liapades to Agios Georgios. We made a short detour to Paleokastritsa then climbed up to Lakones and Bella Vista. We then made for Krini, through ‘Lily Valley’ and down a remarkable footpath that zigzags down a sheer cliff and onto Agios Georgios,
Day 5. We were transferred to Kalami because of bad weather on the mountain. When the weather cleared we walked for 6 hours. First we went along the shore to Agni, Nissaki beach and Kaminaki then up the mountain to the deserted village of Old Sinies. We then returned via Nissaki to Kaminaki and back along the coast to Kalami..
Day 6. We walked for almost 8 hours from Kalami to Agios Spiridon. First we returned to Agni, then ascended the mountain through three mountain villages – Porta, Santa and almost deserted Mengoulas. Reaching the high col about midday. We then descended to Old Perithia – a semi-ruined Byzantine village, down through woods eventually reaching the sea at Almiros. We then followed the Corfu trail to its terminus at Agios Spiridon Beach. We returned by taxi to Kalami.
