And on to Salta, where our Argentinean experience is coming to an end...

We spent 5 pretty lazy days in Salta, preparing for our trip to Bolivia and indulging in Argentina's finest. In summary, we participated in the hostel (HI) barbecue, drank cocktails, drank wine, drank beer, ate steak (Ben), ate trout (Gini), went for a walk in the hills, shopped and drank more wine.

The trip up the cable car was pretty good for views over Salta and its surrounds, with the walk back down taking you along some very wealthy streets to a very picturesque church (San Francesco).

There are many tours that are possible from Salta, however as we had done Cafayte and its surrounds already, we thought we would take it easy and save the money. We enquired about a trek, but they were pretty expensive for what they were. After chatting to the very helpful chap at the hostel, we discovered you could do the walk on your own.

We tried the trek on our own on a hot sunny day. Pretty straight forward in that you take a bus to San Lorenzo and start the walk. A nice river to sit by at the bottom and several waterfalls on the way up. On the walk look out for cow crap. I managed to step in a very large one.

We had a couple of amazing meals when we were there, and quite aptly, I (Ben) had my largest steak yet. It was enormous. Admittedly I asked for the largest steak they had, but I didn't expect this. It consisted of two pieces of steak, each about 14" by 6" by 1". Not the thickest, but enough for most. I have to admit I couldn't finish it! Shame on me. Washed down with a pleasant Malbec of course. The restaurant was called Viejo Jacks (Old Jacks) by the way. Great food, and not a gringo hang out.

The other place, which is more of a gringo place, worth checking put is El Solar del Convento. Had another good steak there. The service was second to none. Also get champagne when you arrive.
