The South
From The South in Alabama, United States on Oct 23 '03
***Editor's Note: Okay, so the biggest surprise of the trip will be discussed in this journal entry. However, I need to preface it by saying even though we loved the south and one state in particular, you need to know that we are NOT going to move there...so, don't worry.***
After, we visited Grampa, we drove thru Kentucky. And Yes, Kentucky is beutiful. So, there we were in a nice state park(they even had a lodge where we could watch Survivor really close to where we camped). We had a great campfire, under a clear sky and then we went to bed. In the middle of the night, we were waken up by a downpour...not so nice. Well, the $20, really old tent held up...well, at least we were dry all night but by the time we left the next morning, there was nothing too dry. We went to Mammoth Caves NP, KY(really awesome!) that morning and then to The Grand Ole Opry in Nashville, TN. By the way, the Grand Ole Opry is bunk! So, we headed south(that would be further into 'The South'), checked into a hotel, piched the tent inside the hotel, laid out everything else that was soaked by the rain, cranked on the heater and went to dinner! Ahh, southern food and hositality.
So, after Tennesse, we headed to the great state of Alabama. And we are not kidding, it is a great state!! The first day we went to the Space museum(Mom would be proud) and it was really interesting! Again, we were proud to be an American. The next day(after a night in our first KOA) we saw southern homes, found out what grits actually are, and saw some pretty churches. Then we went to The Birmingham Civil right Museum which made us proud not to be from the south in the 40's thru 60's. We also saw the state capital and MLK's Church in Mongomery. Then we headed to the coast. We had two nights at a great State Park on the Gulf Coast and it was awesome. There were lakes in the park which was only a bit away from our camp site was the nicest white sand beach! Alabama, who would have thunk it? It is Awesome!!!!
Next we headed to New Orleans, LA. We stayed with Mr. Ken clapp and had a blast!!! Ken had just had a surgery on his sholder and still had us over, what a stud!!! We did a swap tour and we saw more animals then our whole time in W. Africa...Nice! The Rest of the day was all about the French Quarterand we had a blast!!!! By the way, we also desided that any house we have has to have a grand front porch.
So, basically we loved the south! But we are not going to move there!
