my trip to hawaii wasn't what you would call vigorous. it was what you would call lazy. it was awesome. we slept, we woke up just enough to move and get ourselves to the beach and in order to take a nap. the picture on the right (top, from left to right:trina chou, me, lisa ellsworth ) was taken at our favorite beach, big beach. we ate shave-ice. we napped. and then we watched t.v. until we got sleepy and went to bed. most of the time anyway.

we also went hiking and camping in the haleakala(sp?) volcano crater. we hiked and found ourselves on the surface of mars. the landscape was like none i had seen. the clouds moved overhead casting fast moving shadows on the crater floor. wierd plants called silverswords were about the only thing that grew there. they looked like greenish-silver awesome-blossoms and had big pink flowers growing out of them. the only wild life we saw we met at our campsite. they are goose-like birds called ne-ne. signs were posted everywhere that told us, 'please, don't feed the ne-ne.' we didn't bring much food anyway so that wasn't really a problem. we set up camp after hiking all day in the hot sun. i realized that i had forgoten to put sunscreen on the back of my neck and i was pretty sunburned.

we went exploring around the campsite and some other campers told us that they had just gone through a cave. it was a lava tube that had holes to the surface on both ends. we decided to check it out. the minute we got in to the mouth of the cave my heart started to race. i'd never been in to a cave like that before. we were all nervous but decided to go anyway. we climbed through the tunnel for what felt like forever but turned out to be about half an hour. i kept going mostly because i didn't want to go back. the picture at the right(bottom, from left to right:lisa ellsworth, me, trina chou)was taken inside the cave. we don't look scared because we had just arrived at the end and could see light. we were psyched. then we went back to camp.

we were woken in the night by the sound of rain on our tent. our $39 cheap and apprently leaky tent. the rain didn't let up by morning so we decided to make a 'run' for it. we knew the hike out was only about four miles. and fast we went. we ascended the 1000+ feet in under two hours. soaked to the bone we headed for the beach. the next morning we woke up and could bearly stand let alone walk. but that was okay because all we really had on the agenda for the rest of the trip was sleeping on the beach.
