Is the conflict really over?

Belfast is a "new" city in that the conflict just having ended in 2001, Belfast is still in the process of rebuilding after the turmoil.  There were tons of lovely architecture, old being mixed with the new.  We stayed in an "overflow" house which is part of the hostel in the Fall Rd. area.  Nigel and I were the only ones staying here and it was a bit creepy since it was a big old house and it was in an industrial section of town.  However, I quickly got used to it and after our first day here, I was feeling at home.  The only downside was the shower - the hot water was not working and Nigel had to take a freezing cold shower the first day, while I skipped the whole idea entirely.  On the second day however, I couldn't take it any longer and so I made a makeshift little pail where I was scooping warm water from a plugged-up sink as my shower water.  It was arduous, but I felt really good in the end.  We did our own walking tour of Falls Road - saw the hunger striker murals and the Sinn Fein headquarters.  Also saw the small memorial to the people who have died in the conflict.  The Falls Road area is definitely a working-class section of town.  It almost looks impoverished, judging from government-built townhouses that are in disrepair, and the streets and alleyways are ill-maintained.  There's a lot of litter on the ground and the mood in the area is very gloomy - it almost seems like the people are broken from all the conflict, very unhappy.  The weather didn't help either since it was cold, dark and gray, just after the rain.
