I saw a WILD TAPIR!
From Our Travels in Peru and Ecuador in Puerto Maldonado, Peru on Aug 15 '05
Hola again! Well im back in PM. Got some great news...I finally got to see a tapir yesterday morning on the side of the river on the way to the macaw lick!!!!!!!!!!!!! But unfortunately, rich wasnt with me so hopefully he will get to see one in the next few days too!! The canoe driver, Cesar, spotted it upriver and as we got closer to it, it just stood deadstill!! So we managed to get really close up and we watched it for a minute or 2 before it darted into the bushes!! When we were further upriver, we looked back and saw it had swum across the river and was walking on the sandbank on the opposite side of the river. We actaually had a really good morning yesterday, cos we got to see 56 macaws at the clay lick!!!!! There were about 30 eating the clay and the rest were dotted in the tress above the clay..SOOOO pretty!!!! We also got too see a whole bunch of baby caimens that had just been born, on the side of the river. We have been getting some really weird groups lately..i cant remember if i told u that rich got a group of 4 austrians? Well, i got a group of 3 italians!!! And two of them did not speak a word of english, only the woman spoke a little english.. so it was really frustrating cos i couldnt talk to them, or even explain things too them..on the walks id just say " nice tree!" or "look at the bird" or "look at the animal"..and to add to them, i got given two japanese girls too for our trip to the lake yesterday..and the sum total of their english vocabulary must be 20 words!!!!! I dont think i could have gotten a more frustrating group!!! But i suppose i should i count myself lucky, cos it could have been worse..i could have gotten birders!!!!!Anyway, it wasnt so bad cos three other british people joined us for the trip to the lake too, so at least i had someone to talk too!! Rich has just gone up the lodge upriver with his new group..12 people, but im not sure what nationality they are. Unfortunately, with our scedules, i am only going to be seeing him probably in 10 days time, unless we bump into eachother for a few minutes between lodges. Anyway, rich and jorge managed to get themselves bitten by a small caimen!! They tried to catch it for their guests..and it was a dwarf caimen which can be really vicious! I had to laugh! Oh, jorge also saw some fresh jaguar tracks near the control point yesterday..a mother and baby. He came running up to me yesterday morning at breakfast saying he had actually seen the mother and cub, but i managed to get the truth out of him ..that it was only fresh tracks he had seen!Thats a peruvian for you! Anyway, i am taking jorges old group to the lake today(8 people), cos he has to take a new group up the lodge today. We are having a few problems with groups cos one of the guides, Omar, foned in and said he was in hospital and cant guide for a few days..so the scedule is a little hectic. And then 2moro i am getting a new group for a 3day 2 night tour..which i hate cos ur up in the canoe at 4am to get to the macaw lick by 6am..and then back for breakfast, in the canoe again to get to PM and then quick lunch, then on the canoe to get to sandoval lake, and then back to the lodge for dinner at 8pm..it is SOOOO tiring!! Its 7 hours altogether in the canoe for that one day!!! We spend so much time in the motorised canoe..at least an hour and half every day, but on average, 2 or 3 hours a day.Crazy! Anyway, i have to run to take my guests to the airport!! Hope everyone is well!!! Lots of love, Us
