Almost Heaven

John Denver said it best: "Almost Heaven, West Virginia..." However, after taking a good look at the map, we had the startling revelation that he indeed wasn't singing about West Virginia. No Blue Ridge Mountains NOR Shenandoah River. As it turns out, both of these natural beauties appear in -- are you ready?  -- WESTERN Virginia. *shrug* Whatever. It's still a beautiful place (and whatever you do, don't tell the locals about this secret).

Charleston is a very small town in central West Virginia. We drove through Morgantown and stopped at West Virginia University, where Jessie's mom was queen of the Journalism Department (at least, that's what she claims her title was). Took some photos, then realized there was nothing to do in town. WVU was pretty much it. On to Charleston!

What do you know? Nothing to do in Charleston, either! Except for KARAOKE!! What better songs to sing than duet versions of "On the Road Again" and "Take Me Home, Country Roads" (to which the entire bar yelled, "Hey, they're singing our song!" Little do they know...) Everyone there seemed to know each other, and it was pretty obvious we weren't locals, but they were very friendly and inviting just the same. We had a great time! (Thanks, MoJo's!)

Queen of the Journalism Dept., indeed! I'd say Goddess! (These legends grow over time, you know.) Jessie - love the photo of you at Woodburn Corners - my office was in Martin Hall, the 2nd oldest building. Sorry you aren't seeing the campus in the fall when the leaves are ablaze with color. xoxox Mom
