Mom and Kim arrive on Saturday (8/5). They’ve upgraded the rental car and we have a roomy white 4WD Subaru that will be much better for our road trip. At first Kim isn't sure how to 'work' the car, and has it in a semi-automatic state, but she finally figures out to put it into automatic drive.

The plan is to spend the first night at my place in San Jose. I take them to Santana Row where we grab lunch at the Village California Bistro and Wine Bar and I show off San Jose’s newish live, work, and play destination. Afterwards we head back to my place and walk to the J. Lohr Winery, only about a mile away, for our first wine tasting of the trip. Tasting here are free (we won’t see that again).
