I saw it on the map and didn't think much of it. Another small dam, or so it appeared. We arrived in the morning and crossed the bridge that paralleled the dam when we realized the size of Glen Canyon. I immediately did a 180 and saw Anne roll her eyes......great, another dam tour. This was one of the most fascinating things we have done and it cost us nothing but time.
This dam is 16 feet shy of Hoover (Hoover is 726) and is equally impressive. It was built between '57 and '64 and resulted in the death of 17 guys. Total cost of dam: 187 million. Total cost of powerplant: 97 million. There's a total of 8 turbines that fuel power for a whole bunch of cities that we have never heard of.

Check out the picture of the guy mowing the lawn. I see myself doing something like this in 10 years. Okay, quit asking already. "Why do they have a nice lawn at the bottom of this water holder?" Well, when the water runs down the shafts inside the dam, and then turns nearly 90 degrees towards the turbines, the whole deal shakes. When the whole deal shakes, it creates a bunch of dust. Dust is annoying and no one likes it. It's worse on windy days. So, plant grass and then there is no dust. Something like that. bkh
