Up and Over

3800 feet up to the pass and 800 back down on the other side.  Perfect weather and no bear attacks - what more could you want?  The ecology varied from temeperate rainforest on the American side to Arctic rock and scrub on the Canadian side.  The hike was challenging enough for each of us carrying 30 to 40 pounds on well-made backpacks.  Imagine doing it 40 times, with a 60-pound crate strapped to your back, wearing wool clothes in December 1897.  I'll pass.
