Granada
From France - Costa Del Sol - Spain - and Ibiza 2008 in Granada, Spain on Aug 13 '08
Greetings from Granada Spain. A town of 300,000 people. Once the grandest city in Spain under Moorish rule, now is not the case under Christian rule. (Don’t blame me. Lol) Granada is simply a city that explores the monuments of the Moorish civilization and its conquest.
Granada’s incredible Alhambra fortress, a fortified city, was the last strong hold of the Moorish Kingdom in Spain and considered one of Europe’s top sights attracting approximately 8,000 visitors a day. This last and greatest Palace highlights the splendor of the Moorish civilization in the 13th and 14th centuries. This palace used to be a city on its own housing approximately 2000 people. Getting tickets is very difficult. Be sure and reserve prior to coming into town. People wait in line hours only to get turned away.
FORMER MOORISH KINGDOM IN SPAIN
To supplement the Alhambra, were the magnificent gardens which grew fruits and vegetables for the 2000 residents of Alhambra. The gardens were originally a summer home of the Moorish kings. Water features of every kind flourish throughout the gardens. Water was the purest symbol of life to the Moors. (as a Pisces, I notice these things !)
Down the hill from the fortress is The Albaysin, Spain’s best old Moorish quarters. Stroll thru these narrow cobblestone streets and navigate past all the Gypsy women. Enjoy shopping in all the old world shops.
Enjoy breathtaking views from Plaza San Nicolas looking down on the city, the Moorish quarters, and across to the Alhambra lit up at night with a beautiful red glow. (Bill Clinton and his family did in 1997 on tax payers money)
Don’t miss the Cathedral, Spain’s second largest cathedral for its bright and renaissance design.
Granada was a delightful two day city and now on to Seville.
