The Journey

Fortunately, the trip to London was flawless...despite our inability to catch any  z zzs. We flew Air Canada on the Boeing  777, the only  jet of its kind in the entire fleet complete with movies on demand and two meals in 6 hours. Even though we weren't hungry, we scarfed it down not knowing when would be the next time we'd get a bite. With no delay, and bags arriving on time and intact, we hopped the underground for our thirty minute ride to The Royal Bayswater Hostel in Bayswater, adjacent to the lush and expansive Hyde Park. Our journey was just beginning.

The Hostel

The Royal Bayswater turned out to be not quite so royal. First impression: The main key card entry to the first floor doesn't work, but it does present the illusion of safety. Then it's up the stairs to room 105, a 12 person room with a private bathroom,  built in pool, sauna and ping pong table. Ok. By pool I mean the massive puddle that forms in the bathroom after taking shower, sauna- there's no air conditioning, and ping pong-the constant banter among the rooms many multi-national guests.

Despite the lacking amenities, the transient environment of hostel dwelling is constantly interesting and opens doors to temporary friendships with travelers from all over the globe. Once you get to know someone slightly, it's time for them to pack up and leave to their next destination. Often, we don't know anyone's name. It's "the guy from Toronto who fell in love with a Thai prostitute in Amsterdam" or "the choral student from PA who loves to sing drunk". However brief, the conversations prove interesting. Last night from a Danish scholar we learned the metric system was created when France measured it's country from one end to the other and titled the distance inbetween "meters".

Sightseeing Rundown

So, we arrived in London Wednesday morning on no sleep.  After visiting the hole in the wall, atm, and throwing our bags in our room we headed across the street from the hostel into Hyde  Park.  It is massive, sprinkled with monuments, picnickers, ducks, squirrels, swan, pigeons, pot smokers, and just about everything  else you could imagine... in a park in the middle of London.  From there it was a lot of walking.  We didn't really have a plan, just a map and no sense of distance.  We  ended up a Buckingham palace and decided we would go back on thursday to  witness the  official changing  of the guard.

To save time this is London, for us anyways...

  • Lots of walking,  more than you can imagine
  • Big Ben
  • London eye, big ferris wheel, didn't ride- too much money
  • Old House of Parliament
  • Westminster Abbey, burial ground to Florence Nightingale,  Isaac Newton, tons of others
  • Trafalgar Square, London's center , named after battle with Napoleon won by  Briton
  • National Portrait Gallery
  • National Theater, saw "A matter of life or death"- intimate round theater
  • Portebello open market in Notting  Hill
  • National Science Museum
  • Victoria and Albert museum
  • The swan pub  for a pint of english beer
  • Cappucinno and picnics in Hyde Park

Food for Thought

Interesting Facts

1. Rev. Jon Newton wrote "Amazing Grace". This was the same man who 34-years prior to repenting and becoming a reverend perpetrated violence on the MIddle Passage-including the rape of women. The song was later song by slaves while they worked on the plantations.- National Portrait Gallery

2. The Princess Diana Memorial is interactive- a cement circle lying on the ground with water running perpetually around it. Visitors are encouraged to splash around and play, celebrating the life of the much loved princess. -Hyde Park

Not sure if you will get this in time or not, but one of my UK friends gave me this list of things to do: SHOPPING Camden market is great - especially on a Sunday. Can get all kinds of cool clothes and see some very strange people in the process! You just need to hope on a tube to get to Camden, free to walk around the market. Oxford Street is a shopper's paradise. All the big names have stores here. If they want to venture further out of London to Kent they can go to Bluewater which is the biggest shopping centre in Europe. You can easily get a coach or train to Bluewater - the station near it is called Greenhithe. GETTING A COFFEE/RELAXING Covent Garden is a great place for relaxing and getting a cup of coffee. There are often street entertainers around. London Zoo is a nice place and not just for kids! Trocadero Centre near Piccadilly Circus has shops as well as a mini funfare upstairs with rides. It is free to get in, you just have to pay if you go on any of the rides. HISTORICAL/CULTURAL The British Museum in Holborn/Westminster is interesting as you can see lots of unusual collections like Egyptian Mummy's. You have to pay to get in, but worth it. London Dungeon is not too expensive to get in, that is right by London Bridge station. It is about England's history BUT not the nice bits! It is meant to be like one giants scarey haunted house that you walk around. Is great. Amora - an exhibition currently on with a twist. If you google it you will find more info, but basically it is about relationships and all the stuff you never knew but should! It is an interactive thing. London is famous for it's Westend theatre and there are lots of places selling discount tickets. The one in Leicester Square is a safe bet. Avenue Q is hilarious and you can get tickets from as little as £10 during the week. (Personally I've always wanted to see Avenue Q) Traffalgar Square - always nice place to visit and Buckingham Palace isn't too far away. It is a bit of a walk though! Again in Kent they could visit Canterbury. Canterbury is like an actual Charles Dickens town. Has cobble stone streets, a cathedral, quaint shops... GOING OUT/ENTERTAINMENT If they like clubbing or live music then head to Tiger Tiger which is near Leicester Square/Piccadilly Circus in a play called the Haymarket. Free entry before 10pm, Friday nights are live band night. They serve cocktails and there is also a restaurant. London is not cheap for drinks however. Wetherspoons is a name to look out for when going in a pub. They own various pubs and drinks and food are very reasonable in them. Comedy Club in Leicester Square. Name says it all, entry is £5 The BBC Television Centre runs daily tours or if you go online to the Applause Store you might be able to get free tickets to a television recording.

I really loved your entry! It gave me food for thought about my own little trip down there from Edinburgh. I'll be staying at the Royal Bayswater. Is it really really bad? My husband went and read reviews and is now very negative about going. But the price was right and so was the location. We've never stayed at a real hostel before, so we're a bit nervous. Just looking for tips I guess. Really enjoyed your entry.

Yo guys... Hope the trip is going good. How and the hell can you afford this..? Mom..dad...? are you to blame..? Anyway if you guys get the chance stop by the town of Uxbridge, this is where your Aunt Lisa and I lived for two years. Small little newstand at the top of the hill Aunt Lisa used to work at. Ask for dennis Ponton..he is the owner.. tell him who you are... he'll get a laugh. Also go by Pinner Rd at Harrow On The Hill, this was our first home. Elton John is from this area also..Enjoy....and write soon
