Everyone told me that this was the most beautiful part of the whole Appalachian Trail. They just may have been right. It flanks Mt. Rogers- the highest point in Virginia and is mostly lovely scrub land with mounding rocky outcrops, lots of wild flowers and azaleas and blueberry bushes. There are also wild feral ponies which have to be fenced out of a few water sources and will even eat sugar out of your hand. I also heard that they bit some people and would even eat your sweaty socks or backpack straps if you didn't hide them in the shelter. and I don't know if they were filtering it in through hidden speakers, but I seemed to hear the theme for The Fellowship the entire time we were stomping through the heather.
