We are finally here in the place where we will be staying for almost five months. It's unreal - I still haven't really adjusted. Having never been further away from home than Canada, it's a little surreal to look out my window and see palm trees and tropical flowers, not to mention walking 3 minutes and being at a white sand beach on the Indian Ocean.

Our landlord Dave is unbelievable. He has already shown us the town, where to buy cheap groceries, and where to avoid (here, white=tourist and we could get majorly inflated prices if we shop near the 5-star hotels). He also treated us to a local snack called Dal Puri, which is a crepe filled with curried vegetables and other spices. Very tasty, filling and cheap (only 8 rupees; about 25 cents). We also got to tag along with him and his niece Asha to look at cars for her.

It gets dark here at 6pm (14:00), so taking jetlag into account it's been very easy to go to bed early. Although, that does lead to waking up and making entries on the travel blog at 1:30am (4:30pm home time). It's Saturday here: the day my lost baggage should be arriving. I look forward to being able to change clothes, and have my swimsuit. Yesterday, Jacob and I went to the market, the beach, and out to eat at a Chinese place (all courtesy of the £70 from British Airways for losing my bag. I haven't even used up a quarter of it yet). It was very tasty and refreshingly different from how they make Chinese food in the US. We also sampled some of Mauritius' own beer, called Phoenix, which has been rated number one in the world a couple different years. It was very good - not to menion the thrill of being able to order it at a restaurant.

Overall, things are remarkable different. I think Jacob is perfectly happy and soaking it all in, and I am patiently waiting for it to be the same with me. Once we complete the milestone of starting school and get used to the daily routine, I'm sure all my nerves will be soothed. We both got to call home, and that helped.
