We arrived to Madurai hoping that we could rest. For that we needed to find a good hotel and in this department we got lucky: the first one we tried was the one. Good clean rooms, AC... We just had to sleep a bit, to test the bed! Also we went for breakfast (we arrived at 11 am so it was still breakfast time!). The rooftop view is amazing, directly over the town center where you can see the temple towers.

We tried to go to a palace but when we got there it was closed… bad luck, but Helena bought some bracelets so she was happy and I was too! On the way back we found this really good Shop where there are a lot of western products and brands. India meets West again.

We’ve tried every approach: ignoring, saying no, answering in Portuguese… The one that seems best is the unexpected, eg. Tell them when you need them you’ll call

Madurai has a big problem, there are a lot of taxi drivers, rickshaw drivers, autorickshaw drivers, guides, shopkeepers, intermediates, street sellers,… And thus they have to be really persistent in order to sell something to you. Sometimes they even follow you for 100m or so. We’ve tried every approach: ignoring, saying no, answering in Portuguese… The one that seems best is the unexpected, eg. Tell them when you need them you’ll call (they look at you with a sense of despair, and thinking this is a first).

The restaurant we recommend is great (we ate there twice, they even recognized us in the second).

Spain seems to be strong here, there are a lot of Spaniards, even more than French (which seemed until now the major tourist’s nationality.

We spent 2 days here and should get our bus tomorrow to Kanyakumari, the southernmost point of the Indian Subcontinent. This is the first time I can use the present tense with truthness, so I’m happy my writing could finally catch up with our mad trip!
