Edinburgh
From Asia and Europe in Edinburgh, United Kingdom on Jul 19 '07
The first thing that struck us about Edinburgh is that its just like Dunedin of New Zealand (where we live), only much bigger and better (Dunedin doesn't have a massive castle bang in the middle). The streetnames/suburbs are the same, the houses look the same, the churches look the same and the weather was pretty much the same (i.e. cold even though it was summer).
And the history of Edinburgh is incredible. Whereas we would be lucky to see a building 200 years old in New Zealand, in Edinburgh there are buildings that were built circa 11th century and earlier.
I did a "ghost tour" of the underground vaults of the city. These were rooms that were built on the surface of the city but subsequently buried and are supposed to have extremely high levels of paranormal activity. The tour was quite good (we didn't see any ghosts by the way) but I was disappointed that we didn't experience any "jumper-outers" (people that jump out of the dark to scare the people on the tour). Apparently this is offered on other tours.
