Hello everyone!

We made it Salzburg. The train trip from Zurich to Salzburg was very beautiful, going through the amazing alps was like nothing we have in Australia! We also got to meet some very interesting people on the train, including a very drunk Austrian guy who was sharing the compartment with us. He was quite nice, and lots of fun to talk to as well...very interesting conversation!! Again our German is not quite up to scratch but we got around - mostly with lots of hand gestures and exasperated looks!

We were both very impressed with the buildings in the old town of Salzburg. The place where we stayed was about 5mins walk from the old town. The hostel wasn't anything to write home about but in a way that was good because it encouraged us to get up off our butts and go sightseeing! Again, it´s all very different from anything in Australia! During our time in Salzburg we managed to see all of the old town including Mozarts Geburtshaus (birth place) and Mozartplatz, Festungssalzburg (castle), many churches and very old buildings and statues and fountains. Thanks to the Salzburg card (23 euros) for free public transport and being good value! The trip to the Hohensalzburg Fortress was very interesting. You can walk up there if you're brave but we took the easy option in the cable car. From there we took the walking audio tour and then explored a little by ourselves - including finding that bull that capps told us about! The view from up there is amazing!

The day after we got up early took a trip to Hellbrun to see the palace and trick water fountains. That was heaps of fun! Gee - that tour guide must love his job; wetting unsuspecting tourists with the flick of a switch. It was a really hot day though so was much appreciated. We also visited the Salzburg Zoo - many animals from all over the world and one sad looking emu. We've both seen  better zoos but we have to admit that the scenery around the zoo is unbeatable!!

We also managed to try some local cuisine such as big pretzel things (Brezel) and Shnitzel. Overall, it is a very beautiful city with lots of interesting things to do.
