Stop 6. Merida
From Short stopover in LA in Merida, Mexico on Jun 15 '07
The journey from Palenque to Merida took us about about 9 hours on the bus but it went quickly and as I´ve said before the buses in Mexico are great. These guys could probably teach us how to run a bus service back home. It was a 5 minute taxi transfer to the hotel and there were no problems getting a cab outside.
Jo and I headed out for a walk around the town and met everyone for lunch in the evening. Merida is a proper little tourest town. Everywhere we looked we saw them wearing the uniform of combat shorts, flip flops, baseball cap and bumbag/daysack. The fact that it is a tourest town is reflected in the prices for food and drink and the stuff that´s on offer to drink and eat. Around the Zocalo and other areas we were paying double what we were paying elsewhere for food and drink. There are a lot more people trying to sell us T shirts, place mats, fans etc.
This is the place to buy hammocks and textiles though. We saw so many well textiles and at unbelievably cheap prices.
We´re just about out of cash now and living on bread and water (not quite that bad) so we had to say no. Our Jo was saying that next time she´s going to come back here with an empty bag.
Jo and I are fully toured up now, as are the majority of our group, and we spent and we spent the whole time exploring the town and chilling out. There was lots of live bands on over the weekend we were here. The streets were packed with people partying and dancing in the roads and on the pavements and we had a great time wandering around and taking the atmosphere. Some of our group went to the beach which is only 1/2 an hour away by bus and some went to see the flamingos. Also there´s bull fighting at the weekend if you´re that way inclined.
