St. Patrick’s Day weekend, I joined Skyler, her mom, and her sister Jessica for a road trip to Münich. We left on Thursday evening and drove about three hours, arriving around 11 p.m. We slept well that night in the Holiday Inn-no thank you hostels! The next morning we woke up and ate breakfast at the buffet, which tasted absolutely amazing! Finally ready to start our day, we took the metro to the Olympic Stadium. While it didn’t have any historical value, the grounds looked absolutely beautiful with a small lake and tailored lawns. Afterwards we headed towards the main city center. There we wandered around the Hofgarten, which is basically a large garden area in the center of the city. From the Hofgarten we admired the historical buildings around Odeonplatz, such as Feldherrnhalle and Theatinerkirche. Feldherrnhalle holds its significance in that it was the scene of Hitler’s 1923 unsuccessful “Beer Hall Putsch.” Next we visited the Residenz, which previously housed Bavarian kings. We toured both the Residenzmuseum and Schatzkammer, in other words the palace itself as well as the royal treasury. The royal treasury was absolutely incredible! It blew me away! Daddy….I want some jewels like those! Haha! Anyway, we spent the remainder of the afternoon simply walking around the city. Münich boasts some beautiful architecture. Late that afternoon, or rather evening we made it to our final destination, Hofbraühaus. Hofbraühaus, the largest beer hall in Münich began as a court brewery in 1589 by Wilhelm V. We had a blast! We all ordered the original liter beers. I, however, opted for a Radler, which is half beer and half lemonade. The atmosphere could not have been better. It was a mix of older German men dressed in the traditional lederhosen as well as tourists. We ate giant pretzels in accompaniment with our beers. It was a fabulous experience, especially since Skyler and I missed Oktoberfest. That evening, exhausted, we opted to call it a night early, retiring to the hotel around 9 p.m. Saturday we awoke and began the drive back to Heidelberg. We did, however, stop at the concentration camp in Dachau, which like previous experiences was extremely interesting and moving. Overall, it was a wonderful, relaxing weekend! I loved being able to spend it with Skyler and her family!
