I first read about San Miguel de Allende about 10 years ago? when reading the popular book by Tony Cohen ...On Mexican Time. This book was the first to plant in me the desire to travel to Mexico...although I forgot the name of the town it was based in and only made the connection after spotting the book in our rented apartment.

San Miguel is an enchanting town. Beautiful cobble stoned streets with gorgeous shops, cafes, homes and plazas. Apparently it was voted one of the top 20 places in the world to retire to, so the town now has more than its share of well heeled American retirees. You can buy or just tour the spectacular villas and casas, all finished and fitted out with the exquisite furniture, furnishings and art available in the local shops. It is subsequently not the place to buy things..if you are watching your budget.

The highlights from our stay were relaxing on the rooftop terrace of our casa, enjoying Chilean wine and gouda cheese...both hard to come by elsewhere in Mexico. I also did a 2 hr jewellery workshop and made some gorgeous pieces with torqouise, red coral and grey pearls. A bargain for 2 hrs solo with the teacher for 80 pesos <less than A$10> and materials.

The boys found a playmate in the plaza one day and enjoyed some soccer with him, and we all enjoyed our last day spent at La Gruta...fantastic hot springs with skinny tunnel to swim up on the way to the hottest of the 3 pools, inside a cave.

After a week spent with the four of us sharing a hotel room, the luxury of our own house and kitchen allowed us to spread out and enjoy eating in for a change. Bliss!
