Our final stop of the day is Burgos and a lovely hotel opposite the Hospital de la Concepcion. After making myself comfortable I decide to see if Yee and Susan want to go out and about. I get their number from reception and give them a ring. Although they both agree to join me, I get the feeling that they would rather stay in and relax.

It takes us about five minutes to walk down to the old town. We enter it by crossing a bridge over the river and then passing through an incredible arched gateway – the Arco de Sant Maria. Referring to it as an arch or gateway is a serious understatement. It looks like a miniature castle and is adorned with statues and turrets.

We did eventually get to the cathedral but discovered you couldn’t just go in – you have to buy tickets. Presumably this is down to its status as a major stop on the pilgrims’ road to Santiago. So instead we wandered around the medieval streets instead. It’s certainly an experience going shopping with Yee, her approach is that you should just buy everything!

The riverside views are lovely and I try to get a photo that sums it up. Sadly the group of ducks currently swimming about on it have other ideas and give us a right royal run around!

Later in the hotel we have a very strange meal. It starts with asparagus soup, followed by battered fish and lettuce! Then we have steak and chips followed by the cheap block style ice cream I remember from my childhood.
