Mykonos
From Stunning vistas in Mykonos, Greece on Oct 23 '06
Well after a lovely stay in Santorini we had to move on. We managed to get a ferry form Santorini port to Mykonos. The drive down to the port was a tad scary as it was a long windy road with a speedy greek driver who spoke on the phone the whole time gesturing with his hands as we all looked down the side of the cliff.
Our ferry turned out to be a huge flash CAT! Yay.
We arrived at Mykonos and managed to get half price exquisite lodging with he Greek Aunty. Once we were settled in we went for a wander. Mykonos was another gorgeous wee Island full of friendly inhabitants and windy walking streets. The town has lanes and lanes of shops, restaurants and old people. It was very charming. There is even a place called 'Venice' which is pretty much old colourful buildings that look like they have been built in the water and reflect in the water, very cool around sunset time.
Day Two We spent half of our second day there at Delos, the small island in the centre of the Cyclades islands. It has a huge ancient city based there and loads of legends. We climbed to the top of the island for a lovely panoramic view of the area. The museum was really impressive with artefacts from the day to day lives of the ancient civilization including nail mouldings, crockery, jewellery, e.t.c. Everything is ornately decorated and you can feel that it was valued and precious. Back at Mykonos we found a delicious sweet store and managed to consume Turkish delight (fresh) and amazing chocolates. we went for a walk to the windmills and once again found ourselves entranced by the beautiful sunset.
Day three We decided to go and see the BEACH, how exciting! We got a taxi over to Ornos, a renown stunner only to find it deserted, full of cigarette butts, animal faeces and rubbish. We were disappointed to say the least, it was so polluted. We walked back to town and found a medieval bakery! The only change is electricity and even then just a wee bit of lighting, I hope health and safety have changed too! We bought a wholemeal loaf which was delicious! It was underground and was like stepping into an giant oven as the aroma of yeast and the heat encompassed you when you entered.
We headed back to Piraeus (Athen's Port) and sadly said goodbye to the Island paradise we'd come to love!
