Here's some historical information on my home state of Wisconsin.
The word Wisconsin was used by Indians to describe their use of the abundant waterways to gather wild rice.
The first European to explore was Jean Nicolet while searching for a waterway to China. Many more Europeans (primarily French)followed to pursue the fur trade.
The Republican party (Abraham Lincoln) was founded in Ripon, WI in 1854.

Wisconsin has a long and proud progressive history. One example is the strong abolition movement that existed prior to the Civil War. This may be best highlighted with the escape of Joshua Glover led by Sherman Booth.
Wisconsin has also earned the nickname "the laboratory of democracy." It was one of the earliest states to: conserve forest land, enact workman's compensation, set a minumum wage for women.
