And the rockets' red glare

It's the fourth of July, and we're in the belle of the South. We rolled into town and found a hotel just outside of downtown Savannah. Once we checked in, we thought it would be fun to drive down to the historic district and do some sight-seeing...and boy, did we see some sights!
We just happened to come across River Street, a sunken road down along the banks of the Savannah River. Apparently it's the hot spot for nightlife here, and the people showed up in droves. A fireworks spectactular was only a couple of hours away, and thousands of people were there to participate in the festivities. We grabbed a bite to eat at Bernie's, got it to go and escaped to the upper level to watch the fireworks from a better vantage point. The majority of the show was average at best compared to the fireworks we saw last night at Disney World, but the finale was certainly grand. Afterward, everyone rushed back to their cars, but we weren't in a hurry. We strolled along the streets there and took in the sights around the Savannah College of Art and Design, the best of which was an old-timey ice cream shop and a movie theater showing The Philadelphia Story. Eventually, we made our way back to the car (with 9 minutes to spare in the meter!), and headed back to the hotel.

Overall, Savannah is a beautiful town with great history and beautiful scenery, but with a very unique population. We enjoyed our stay, but are ready to see what the rest of Georgia will bring us.
Happy Fourth of July! (We missed your show, Joey.)
Love from the road,
Ben and Jessie
