St Emilion is a beautiful, albeit chic and touristy, wine town near the city of Libourne just east of Bordeaux. It's winding, cobbled streets lead you through the town to the top of a steep hill with fabulous views of the surrounding countryside.

It's famous not just for its wine but also for its macaroons, so chewy and delicious you'll be going back for more.

The town is rich in history which has produced some of its more intriguing sights

The town is rich in history which has produced some of its more intriguing sights: an underground church carved from the limestone rock; 35km of catacombs dating back to the 8th century; and a pottery museum featuring pieces from the Roman times.

Or you could just go and taste the wine. That alone makes it worth the trip.
