4 May 2002 - Back in sunny Juneau!

5 May 2002 - More sunshine....

6 May - and more sunshine.....there has been record breaking sunshine in Juneau but very cold with winds....two months with no rain!

7 May - Well, the clouds and the rains have returned for my arrival back home....oh well!

8 May - The sun is shining for the three cruise ships that arrive today to bring us almost 8000 visitors. Had a great hike out Basin Road to the old gold mine and to view the snow that is still on the mountains....also spotted a porcupine in addition to the singing birds and budding trees and flowers.

10 May - Another trip to the library to submit job applications to the State of Alaska then boarded the Le Conte ferry at 2pm for eight hour ride to Tenakee Springs via Hoonah. Visited with Roger and Leba and enjoyed walking the town (very small and no motorized vehicles), soaking in the hot springs and eating and sleeping....even had time for a wonderful massage. Boarded the ferry again at midnite on Saturday for return to Juneau Sunday morning. The ship basically does a turnaround....it continues on to Sitka then returns to Juneau via Tenakee and Hoonah once a week....also enjoyed watching the whales and seals and eagles!

12 May - Happy Mum's Day! After returning on the ferry, I enjoyed International Museum Day in Juneau, visiting the Last Chance Mining Museum (for the dedication of Miners Hall and great chocolate chip cookies), the AK State Museum (the new Robert Ketchum photography exhibit and lunch of hotdogs and icecream), the City Museum (enjoyed the Ice Worm Wiggle dancers) and the House of Wickersham (for wonderful music and Russian tea with Elva) The walk out Basin Road was great as I spotted a few bears on the mountain and the noise of avalanches with the melting spring snows!

13 May - Since I am without a car, I took the bus to the Nugget Mall to pick up a high speed modem for my DSL internet connection so I do not have to wait at the library for my thirty minute stint!

14 May - Ambassador Peck spoke at our World Affairs Council Meeting.

15 May - The sun has returned to Juneau for a few days so decided to mow the lawn....actually the weeds and some grass...and to plant some flowers(marigolds) in the flower boxes. A call regarding a job interview for next week....now must find some clothes to wear....besides shorts, tshirt and tevas!

16 May - More cruise ships in for another sunny day here....

17-19 May - Rotary District Conference at Centennial Hall (includes free lunch at the salmon bake!).

18 May - Juneau Convention and Visitors Bureau (the reason I sit at the kiosk and greet the cruise ships) is having their annual Downtown Walkabout in order for us to get to know the local merchants....and with all the turnaround in business that happens each year, it is needed!

21 May - Job interview!

22 May - Another job interview! A very rainy day in Juneau. There is a new shuttle bus in town that is a free ride to the new Super KMart so went out to suss it out.....it has been remodelled over the years from a Kmart to a Big Kmart and now a Super Kmart....heaps of food being the latest addition.

23 May - Followup to job interviews!

24 May - Any overcast day in Juneau but not a wet one yet.....

25 May - A beautiful sunny day here so boarded the M/V Keet with Auk Nu and travelled to Tracy Arm Fjord to view the Sawyer Glacier...about a three hour trip from Juneau.

26 May - Morning duties at the information kiosk greeting visitors to Juneau....not a very busy morning as the larger cruise ships do not arrive until the afternoon.

27 May - More duties today for tourism aboard the Princess ship as a greeter.

31 May - Accepted a job at the State of Alaska....wonder if they will let me start in September? Decided to start in two weeks(17 June)....maybe the sun will shine in Juneau...

5 June - Started the day with a great massage and then took the free tourist shuttle (free for me since I volunteer for the Juneau Convention and Visitors Bureau) to the Mendenhall Glacier for a great two hour hike on the East Glacier Trail. It was pouring down rain in town but fifteen miles out the road the sun was shining and I even stripped off the rain gear and the fleece down to my tshirt!

6 June - River rafting down the mightly Mendenhall River with views of the glacier.

7 June - Supposed to go whale watching but Captain Todd got sick!

8 June - After a great morning of garage saling with Michelle, she dropped me at the Auke Bay Harbor and I boarded the Fairweather Catamaran(www.chilkatcruises.com) for our 2 1/2 hour journey to Haines.....clear sunny weather and met a friend (who is going onto Skagway) that I had met on my journey to Tracy Arm last week. Staying at the old Halsingland Hotel (www.hotelhalsingland.com) and then returning to Juneau on Sunday.

9 June - The weather has taken a turn for the worst as the rains are back as is the heavy fog. Boarded the 4pm boat for Juneau but did not see much on the return trip.

11 June - Hired a Rent a Wreck to drive out the road.

12 June - Great hike with the group to Salmon Creek dam built in 1914....overcast but not raining.

13 June - A gorgeous warm day with heaps of sunshine....rose early for a jog out Basin Road and then washed curtains, cleaned windows and then scraped paint off the back of the house....took a break with Michelle to Costco for nibbles for lunch.....then returned to the back of my house to paint it Navajo Red....at least the bottom six rows of wood as I cannot reach any higher even with the step ladder and you are not getting me to go any higher!

14 June - Flag Day! and a very warm sunny day in Juneau....over 80 degree F! So did more painting on the house and enjoyed lunch in the sunshine with Michelle....

15 June - Joined the Saturday hike group for walk from end of road (40 miles north) from Echo Cove to Cowee Creek through the meadows of wildflowers!
