Tour of Maastricht
From Tour of Maastricht in Maastricht, Netherlands on Jan 16 '06
We woke up today and the ESN tried to show us how to get to the business and economics building, but it was not a very successfull teaching trip. We also saw the law building. I can say that all of the UM buildings are old on the outside, but nice and new on the inside.
We sat through an introduction ceremony, and afterward we got to try our first dutch food. I can't remember the name, but it was a lot like pie...acutally the name sounded a lot like pie. It was really good. After this we went to Jorge's office (the coordinator for IU) and he gave us instructions on how to "try" to set up our internet, which acutally didn't work until Thursday night after I went to the library and had them reenter my username.
A few things to note here, you have to buy ketchup, and their bathrooms had glass doors...very exhilirating.
Once we did this, Nick and I went to the shopping square where we got our dutch phones and at some McDonalds. A few things to note here, you have to buy ketchup, and their bathrooms had glass doors...very exhilirating. Then we went home.
Later that evening we met back up at ESN and they gave us a small tour of the city. It was dark and not very helpful, but the thought was nice. This was followed by dinner at a moderately priced restaurant and pub. Apparently on Tuesday nights they have deals for International students.  They put us in a private room upstairs, where I ordered a pork chop. It was served with a salad and saurkraut. It was really good. After we were all done eating, we were required to play a drinking game. My team actually won, because the dutch team poured out there beer. It was a lot of fun!
After this I racked up a nice big phone bill talking to Kelly, but I had planned on doing it anyway because she was leaving the next day. I can't wait for people to come visit so I can show them around the city. Maastricht has really amazed me with how big it is. I thought it was going to be a very small city with not a lot of shopping, but I found the complete opposite to be true. There are so many shops, that I am just taken back. And a lot of them are very ritzy. Maastricht is supposed to have the nicest and most expensive shopping in the Netherlands. Finally, we went to a different pub after the first one, and once again were treated like Kings. The dutch really want our business.
