2 day trip to the Caribbean coast of Guatemala
From Travel 2005/2006 in Livingston, Guatemala on Oct 14 '05
Amazingly different to the rest of Guatemala. Only accessible by boat, in a ride that left my jaw on the floor. The ride was expensive but well worth the money, as we passed through lush jungle and rainforest, hot water springs and saw some wildlife. We also passed an old colonial castle right in the middle of the lake. The ride was also good as I saw how people who lived in this area went about their day-to-day lives.
Got to Livingston at around 1.50pm, with some of the guys I had met in Rio Dulce. We all checked into the same hotel. Livingston is a small village, again, only accessible by boat and which relies solely on fishing and tourism for income. All the food is slightly more expensive as it has to come by boat. It is where most of the Black Guatemalans (Garifunas) live. The culture is very different, and somewhat what I imagined it to be like in a poor caribbean village. The main town is set within one street so we knew everything within an hour of being there. Since it was a Saturday night here, all the clubs and bars were kicking. We all decided to get a bottle of vodka, got merry and then danced the night away at some of the clubs on the seafront. The highlight of the next day was visiting the Siete Altares waterfalls......a group of seven waterfalls accessible to the top on foot. We hiked up there and then jumped into the pool at the end of the 7th fall, from various cliffs. Some of the guys jumped off trees but I didn't have the guts. Amazing fun, nevertheless. I left Livingston early the next morning.
“Very different!!!!”
