The start of Ramadan is upon us, but it's hard to tell here in N'Gor, land of ex-pats! People will soon begin to fast from sun-up to sun-down and I wonder if I could do it...I'm sure I could if I HAD to, but am glad it is not necessary...we pagans have it pretty easy...kind of like doctors, with the whole "do no harm" mantra! The breaking news here is that I ate coconut fresh from the tree today. (Much better than NPR... 17 dead in the Gaza Strip, yes?!?) I didn't realize that you can eat the tougher skin just below the layer of outer shell. YUMMY!! Also went out for Ethiopian food--this amazing little restaurant that you have to search for down a tiny alley-way...you sit on the rooftop verandah, under billowing swatches of beautiful fabric, and eat with your hands. We had a vegetarian sampler and it was delicious! (I remember the first time I had Ethiopian food in Washington, DC and I thought the "pancakes" tasted like old gym shoes...this was NOTHING like that!!) Tomorrow we head to Saly Portugal and will hopefully take a dance class with artists at the Boogarboo School! (I'm sure I'm butchering the spelling there, but...) Well, it's tres tard ici maintenant, and we have an early start in the morning. More from Chez Shelly on Monday...
