Monseraat
From Europe - The Second Time Around in Catalonia, Spain on May 08 '08
The city tour of Barcelona ended and those not continuing on to the next trip were dropped off in the city. The next part of the tour was to visit the Monseraat , a temple where the monks live high up in the mountains.
The drive was about 45 mins from Barcelona towards Catalonia and as we approach we can see in the far distance the monastery unbelievably high up on the mountains. 1,236 meters (4,055 feet) above sea-level is how high. It’s amazing.
High high up on top of the mountains
The roads were tight and the weather conditions bad. We turn up a corner and had to come to a complete halt as there was another bus coming down the same road and in no way two buses would fit. It was quite frightening going up such winding and narrow roads and the thing stopping the bus going over, is a flimsy road barricade. I was on edge the whole coach ride to the top.
However, a few minutes on, we were no longer at the bottom and had reached the top of the mountains. It was a spectacular scene minus the fact it was raining. We could view over the mountains. A tour guide takes us through the monastery and gives us an insight on the age and other information. All of course I did not take in because I was going photo crazy.
We were given free time as Lyn and I strolled through the cathedrals and souvenir stores. This place is quite beautiful and to look over and see the mountains upon mountains knowing that you are at very high peak.
We decide to indulge in some lunch in the restaurant overlooking the mountains. For a cold day like this one, soup was the perfect choice. We enjoy our lunch and marvellous view. It was then time to meet up with group and head on back into the city.
We head back into the city and are given a few more hours in Barcelona for sight seeing. By now the rain was petering down. It was hard to keep yourself dry even with an umbrella.
Lyn and I decided after spending sometime, we decided to head back in the coach, as the weather really was miserable. We arrive back at the hotel and enjoy the group dinner before it was time for rest.
