Final Destination
From Where The Sky Meets The Earth At The Edge Of The World in Goteborg, Sweden on Aug 17 '08
Our final real stop on the amazing around the world tour was Sweden. Arvid and Helene drove us to the dock where we said goodbye. We had been spoiled our entire time in Norway. The ferry left from Sandefjord and went to to Stromstad where we took the train south to Gothenburg. The boat is a little crazy because most people are on board to buy cheap booze and cigarettes. Its all tax free. There are also slot machines everywhere to keep people entertained. We chose to take it easy watching TV and looking out at the sea. The train was uneventful and expensive but this is Sweden so we expected it.
The whole purpose of heading to Gothenburg was to meet up with our old room mates Christofer and Victor. "The Twins". We had not seen them since they left Sydney so we were obviously excited. They met us at the train station and we rode the tram to Christofer's flat. It was super nice and modern. Even the pillows cost $300. I would have been disappointed if it was any other way. We ate some crepes for dinner. There was a moment of confusion as their accents pronounced it closer to "crap" but we figured it out. After eating we briefly met their little sister Amanda before watching the Abba based movie Mamma Mia. Yes you read that correctly. I have had Abba songs in my head for over a week. Watching Pierce Brosnan sing without his shirt on is a weird way to spend a Sunday night.. but our hosts insisted.
The next morning after a huge breakfast we headed to the ocean by tram. It was a little cold outside so we never swam. Instead we walked along the docks and had a fancy coffee. Just like everywhere we have been completely spoiled. Victor and Christofer have been buying everything. Christofer even slept on the couch last night so Krystal and I could have a bed. We hung out in town for the afternoon looking in some stores and touring the old town. I saw a baseball hat that cost $150 today. Ridiculous. We did almost no touristy things because we were just in town to visit the twins. That being said Gothenburg is really nice with old buildings and canals.
That night Amanda cooked us dinner and we watched James Bond. Just a nice easy night which is nice when you are on the road. It was great to see the twins again. They are both selling hair transplants right now.. so if you think its thinning a little up top I know the guys to call. We said goodbye to Amanda and Victor that night before going to bed.
We flew out to Frankfurt a little after noon so we spent the morning walking around town. We had hoped to see some sights but it poured rain. Krystal wore her white capri pants which somehow signal a rain storm whenever she puts them on. People were openly laughing as her pants turned see through in the rain. We gathered our stuff, said goodbye to Christofer and found the bus to the airport.
I think both of us are really excited to get home, but at the same time a little sad that the adventure is over. Its a weird feeling for sure. From here is basically just flight after flight after flight until we arrive home.
